Epik.com, a company that prides itself in being called the “Swiss Bank of Domains” came up with another daring move. I say daring because they came up with an offer of a one-time cost that will enable you to own your domain name forever with epik. That last bit “with epik” is particularly important because the domain name will have to be transferred from your current hosts to Epik.com (if it’s not already hosted there) for this forever status to hold. However, before we get into the quick review, I will share some reasons why I think this move is worth your money.
1. Peace of mind
However high or low the cost of renewing your current domain name is, you must admit that it is one of the things that makes the year seem shorter. My first reaction upon receiving an invoice or notification is usually to mutter “… I just paid that last month…” only to scan through my email and discover that it is actually a year ago to the dot!
The forever domain option will therefore give you the peace of mind that you need, by paying once upfront and forgetting about ever renewing your domain name again. Peace of mind comes with various advantages; the best in my opinion being long uninterrupted periods of time in which you can exercise your creativity.
2. Increased value of your asset/brand
Depending on the current value of your asset or brand, having a forever domain name attached to it could help you stand out from the crowd should you choose to put it up for sale. Let’s face it, one of the things that we look out for when buying or leasing real estate is the number of years left on the lease; the more the number of years left to the next renewal, the more inclined we will be to make a purchase. So in your case as a seller, this translates into a higher sale price because you can confidently reassure the buyer that they will never have to incur any renewal costs.
3. Perpetual Ownership of a Brand
Imagine that you once had this great idea that you bounced off a few friends and together, you worked hard over the years to build a great brand. Thanks to these efforts, ten years down the road, your previously great idea could have turned into a market leader with global presence and appeal. That notwithstanding, imagine that one day, the person in charge of renewing your domain forgets to perform that simple task due to a pressing deadline. In the next few hours your domain name then went on to expire and was snapped up by a competitor who was always waiting for a slip up. Simply put, the price you’d have to pay for one simple act of forgetfulness would be costlier than a lifetime renewal. So why not make the investment today?
How to own your domain name forever with Epik
To get started, visit Epik’s bulk search and registration portal. Once there, type your preferred domain name into the field, hit search and upon verifying that it is available, you will have to choose between three options; Standard, Forever and Resilient Registration. For the sake of this quick review, we shall only consider the Forever and Resilient Registration options.
Forever Registration Terms
According to the Forever Registration Agreement page, Epik undertakes “in perpetuity, to pay for ongoing renewals for as long as the Forever Domain remains registered at Epik and provided that the associated registry allows renewal of said domain.” What this means is that whereas Epik offers to forever renew your domain name, in some cases the renewal may be subject to the continued commitment of the other registry it partners with to offer the Forever Domain (usually the case for ccTLDs-Country Code Top-Level Domains).
However, be advised that Epik will not be responsible for the subsequent annual renewals of the Forever Domain should the owner decide to transfer their domain hosting to another registry. There will also be no reimbursements for payments already made should the transfer be effected. In the event that the owner decides to transfer the Forever Domain back to Epik at a later date, they will have to enter into a new agreement as the former was automatically annulled when the Forever Domain was transferred to another registry. The Forever Domain may however be transferred to another a new owner who holds an account at Epik without losing its forever registered status.
Should you decide that this is the option for you, Forever Registration for a .com at the time of writing this article goes for a tidy sum of US$399.0.
Resilient Registration Terms
Resilient Registration at the time of writing this article was going for a price of US$888.0. However, with this price tag comes the offer for; blazingly fast site performance, a secure unstoppable web presence and free VPN (Virtual Private Network) clients for all your users. Purchasing this option also gives you the chance to incorporate the Forever Registration, which means that for a single fee, you’ll own a Forever Domain with a few other perks. These include:
- Content Delivery Network – Offers users a high performance network on a global scale that makes for a faster browsing experience.
- DDoS Mitigation – Protects users against Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks usually resulting from compromised systems flooding the bandwidth or resources of your website so that your visitors cannot access your services.
- Anycast IP address – Enables visitors to your website from anywhere in the world to seamlessly access your resources/services using the same IP address, thanks to a well-distributed network of servers bearing the same IP address.
- SSL Certificate – Ensures that all visitors to your website are provided with the highest protection (4096-bit encryption).
- Dynamic Page Optimization – Works behind the scenes to ensure that information on device (PC, Mobile or Tablet) and browser type is quickly detected and automatically adjusted to suit the devices of all visitors to your website.
Worth the Investment
Let’s face it, at an average of US$15 for domain renewal per annum, the US$399 translates into 26.6 years all factors constant. The fact that you are willing to renew your domain name for that long should make Forever Registration a good option, funds permitting. If you are an established brand with a global audience then the Resilient Registration should be considered as a one-off long term investment. The perks above especially the Content Delivery Network and Dynamic Page Optimization will work to your advantage to ensure that your website loads faster than your competitors’ even for visitors accessing from regions that experience slower internet speeds due to low bandwidth. So go ahead and grab your
